Ethan has lived in Indianapolis for the past 20 years or so, and has played guitar since the ripe old age of 11 (for about 15 years now). He started out with a few lessons and tips from friends, playing local gigs in high school bands, but soon got frustrated and bored with music that he felt "wasn't going anywhere". After graduation, he was introduced to a local guitar teacher named Russ Bucy (now one of the owners of R&R Music, and STILL his teacher). Since that day about 7 years ago, he has never been bored with guitar again (and knows quite a bit more about shoes as an indirect result).
Taking lessons from Russ really demonstrated just how far you could delve into music theory. As a result Ethan has developed a strong improv repertoire that includes Rock, Bluegrass, Country, Jazz and pretty much anything that his students can throw at him. To Ethan, the guitar is an instrument that beckons improvisation, and it is the core of his long term cirriculum to develop creative improv skills in all of his students.
Outside of R&R, Ethan owns his own IT Consulting business (SCG Technologies, LLC) which he has owned and operated for the past 3 years. To continue the tradition of teaching that was passed to him (and to balance out the nerd quotient levied on him by owning an IT company), Ethan teaches evenings at R&R Music. His students range anywhere from 7 to 70, and the cirriculum covers everything from Merle Haggard to Pink Floyd.
"Anything REALLY worth doing is going to be difficult, but it is constant dilligence that will separate you from the rest of the crowd" |
what is your philosophy when teaching your instrument? |
|
The goal is to instill a good work ethic and dilligence to make proficient, creative musicians out of my students. That and you have to play a guitar that looks really cool (and make all the really cool "guitar faces" you can while on stage - see Russ Bucy for Advanced Guitar Face Lessons). |

The feeling of community that the store creates. Everyone that works there can't help but become friends. |
anything else we should know about you? |
|
I do work my students pretty hard, but I feel that satisfaction in life comes from hard work. Life should be a challenge, and the reward for meeting that challenge should be success and happiness (and some Ice Cream wouldn't hurt). |
