2002: A Look Back...
The Bulldogs of 2002 had high expectations and played some exciting baseball with their enthusiasm and efforts.  The Dogs ended up with a 19 - 7 record with four rainouts.  We won the Brownsburg Invitational as well as the Hendricks County Championship, and were ranked as high as #1 in mid-April.  Playing in the toughest baseball conference in the state, the Hoosier Crossroads Conference, the Bulldogs swept Hamilton Southeastern in it's final two games to grab 3rd place.  Four players were named All-HCC: Brian Smith (lhp), Sean Gaston (c), Scott Garrard (of) and Kyle Freeman (of).

In other areas of awards, senior lhp Brian Smith was a member of the Indiana South All-Star team!  Members of the Metro West first team were Smith, second baseman Will Reynolds, outfielder Kyle Freeman and catcher Sean Gaston, who was named Most Valuable Player for the Metro West as well as making the Indy Star All-Super Team. Senior third baseman James Hendrickson was a Honorable Mention team member.

Senior LHP Brian Smith won the ERA award with his fine 1.67 to go along with his 5-3 record and 79 K's in 54 IP, he was named MVP.  Gaston won the Batting Champ award hitting .475 and the Golden Glove with a .983 fielding pct.  Senior OF Scott Garrard was named the Mental Attitude Award winner.  Will Reynolds was given the Sportsmanship Award, Kyle Freeman the "Real Bulldog" Award and James Hendrickson was named Most Improved.

The graduated seniors will be remembered for their exciting brand of baseball and many highlights.  Hendrickson's ESPN like plays at third base, Garrard's athleticism, Reynolds' hitting machine, Sides' power, Jon Westrich's hustle, Freije's toughness and the pitching duo of Smith and Dan Fair.  Unfortunately "Diesel's" injury to his shoulder never recovered the last 1/2 of the season and who knows how far the Dog's could've gone in the tourney with him healthy.

The Bulldogs hit .339 as a team while their opponents hit .230.  A lot of young players gained some valuable experience which should propel them into readiness for 2003.  On the mound, junior Mark McGoun and freshman Lance Lynn went 2-0, juniors Randy Wittman and Brandon Anweiler went 3-1 and 2-2 respectively. Junior 1b Steve Roberts hit .314 with 2 HR's while freshmen Nick Shipley, Austin Nickol, Sean Veza and Cory Dragstrem got a taste of varsity action.

Overall, the Bulldogs have shown that Brownsburg Baseball is a program to be reckoned with and the future looks bright.  With continued positive progress and commitment the alumni, community and players can be proud of the Brownsburg High School Baseball Program.
